Michael Collins - Flamingo Lady
congratulations to Geoff Alcorm
Submitted by Michael Collins on Wed, 08/07/2009 - 12:56.Well done Geoff
What determination to keep going and also when the weather
conspired to give you a slow finish in site of that beer and
shower.
I like the sail past a memorable finish.
I am sure you are now enjoying the tremendous hospitality of
the Newport Yacht Club.

Citta Di Salerno found
Submitted by Michael Collins on Mon, 06/07/2009 - 23:05.6th July.
As Flamingo Lady progressed slowly downwind towards the Azores, the
peace and quiet of the afternoons light airs, was broken by a low flying
aircraft. Shortly after there was a VHF call from the rescue plane 310
to the vessel Ocean Adventure, but no answer was heard. A while after
that, the Ocean Adventure radioed the aircraft and asked why a parachute
had been dropped.

Another Day Becalmed
Submitted by Michael Collins on Sat, 20/06/2009 - 19:55.Since the wind began to drop after dark last night
it has just disappeared. I have made little practical advance over the ground in
the last 12 hours and the forecast is for more of the same except the wind is to
go round in circles to make lift interesting.
The sky has moved
Submitted by Michael Collins on Thu, 18/06/2009 - 13:23.It was a frustrating night, the wind dropped just after midnight UT, it
had been lessening for a few hours before that but I had been able to
keep up the pace. It dropped to less than 7 knots and I have to use the
pilot not the wind vane to steer, for a while we kept going at a slow
pace 2-3 knots with only a small amount of swell. However eventually
the wind and progress disappeared.
It was a totally clear night, one of few and I could watch the moon rise
and the planets appear. I rarely have such a good view of the night
horizon whilst studying the stars.

An average day and Aladdin's cave
Submitted by Michael Collins on Wed, 17/06/2009 - 22:42.Today has been another day of averages, average sunshine and average
wind, its amazing how much progress can be made with average wind force
instead of extremes. Its been very enjoyable, but there is a patch of
calm on its way and I do not think I can avoid it. Maybe there will be
a little more wind than predicted, rather than a little less as has
happened with every other calm patch I have encountered.
As the galley food cupboard only had the items I have not eaten in the
past 24 days, I decide it was time to restock from the forward locker.
