The Public Will vote the Best Online Blogs of the Skippers Entered in the Race
Vendee hero Steve White will present the blogSTAR prize, to be awarded to the best Web log by a skipper entered in the Original Single-handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR) starting from Plymouth on May 25th, 2009.
The British sailor has just completed the epic Vendee Globe, the solo, non-stop, round-the-world yacht race, his own written reports inspiring millions of people along the way. The crowd at the finish waived a welcome banner that read, "Thanks Steve, You made us dream".
For three months he battled the Oceans and as 19 boats were forced to retire through injury, or damage, Steve pressed on to finish 8th out of 30 starters and fulfilling a life-long dream to compete in the Vendee Globe.
His feat was amazing, he had to re-mortgage his house several times to fund his project and only gathered enough sponsorship just weeks before the race. His daily blogs during the race stole the hearts of the public: the ever-modest man from Weymouth shared his story with us along the way, and showed the world the power of a dream.
Steve White has now joined the elite of the top solo sailors in the world but has not forgotten his hard journey to date. Four years ago Steve competed in the OSTAR his first major offshore event. Today he looks back with fondness at his first taste of the North Atlantic and will present the blogSTAR prize for the public's favourite web log during the OSTAR where many of the skippers are amateurs, or just semi-professional.
Steve commented: "I feel very honoured to present this prize. The OSTAR was my first single handed race, as such I have great fondness for both the event and the Royal Western who were tremendously supportive, and as such it is a pleasure to be able to put something back into the event that launched my solo career."
This is the first time a prize of this kind is awarded in the sailing world and no one better than Steve White could present it.
