The Italians are closing in for OSTAR

Luca Zoccoli successfully completed his qualifier over the Easter weekend, sailing from central Italy to Antibes in France. Luca encountererd very variable conditions, with gentle following south easterlies at the beginning, flat calms near Tuscany and a big blow on the third night with over 35 knots of sudden westerlies. The approach to Antibe was in full sunshine and summer breeze conditions.

Luca now plans to lift out his 35ft "In direzione ostinata e contraria" and send it to St Malo by road before crossing to Plymouth at the beginning of May.

Going the long way round, Roberto Westermann on his 40ft Spinning Wheel is now in Biscay and only 400 miles from Plymouth after beating hard into the prevailing north easterlies and southward current off Portugal.
