Hi Guys,
A bit more low key today. About midway point now. Been very fast to
here. But have a whole patch of light wind to get through. Looks ok on the map
but in actuality it is about 100miles across - it’s a scale thing,
I have any and all wind angles you like. I have seen enough wind to
sail in from all points of the compass in the last 24 hours. Wind speed 1-8kts.
The wind goes light, then starts to fill in. I get the sails set and the boat
headed on the course I want. The log speed increases nicely, then the wind
direction changes then the wind slowly drops. Then nothing then start all over.
Hasn't got better all day.
At one point I even took down the spi and jib because the rolling was
likely to cause them damage.
There is surprising little wild life out here. I have seen more on trips to the
Azores. A few, very few sea birds, mostly sea pigeons (Petrels?) and shearwaters.
Saw a pod of dolphins on the second day and some big sea mammals (whales?) the
3rd night. I imagined I could see their big black bodies breaking the surface in
the moonlight. I could definitely hear the sudden roaring of their breathing, a
low key note, so a big animal close to the boat.
