1000 miles. One third of the way. The weather's been very clement with
us. Three little lows, the last of which in the right direction. I am
now nearer to Newfoundland than to Brest. For the second third, I'm
now looking toward the great banks, with a particular thought for all
those fishermen who spent their lives in the area. The weather will be
the essential concern, for you have to take the fastest route while
anticipating in order not to get into a difficult position. The last
third's going to be the sprint along the coastline to Newport, but for
the moment that's not yet the problem.
Gentle breeze, 8-9 true knots from ENE. Not much apparent wind left in
those conditions. A leftover northern swell —2 meters— , and some
chop. Spinnaker and solent to avoid what the French call "egg cups"
around the stay. 4 knots running is just as good as close-hauled, and
more restful.
This afternoon, nap, small repairs and reading.
Til later
