KIRK FRANCIS is a sound mixer/production sound mixer of Italian origins that won an Academy Award (Oscar) for The Bourne Ultimatum and that I have the pleasure to know personally.
We talked about the Ostar 2009 and I took a chance to ask him a couple of questions.
JAZ: tell me about you, what do you do?
KIRK: I record sound -- for movies to make money, and nature and music for pleasure.
JAZ: You have an Oscar right?
KIRK: yes, i have an Oscar, but awards are just like hemorrhoids -- sooner or later every a****le gets one........
JAZ: which is your relationship with the ocean?
KIRK: the ocean is my mother. I am never comfortable too far inland.
JAZ: what do you know about sailing?
KIRK: I know how to follow orders from a good skipper; my favorite sailboats are those owned by someone else (so I don't have to pay for them!); I would like to sail to Hawaii from my island someday, in someone else's boat, of course.
JAZ: I remember reading in a book written by a solo sailor something like:"...and after all that time on a boat, alone, the most horrible sound I heard was human voice...". What's your reaction to it?
KIRK: I prefer nature to people.
JAZ: do you think most people could handle being alone for a month?
KIRK: I love being alone, but most people probably don't. This is why I like being alone.
JAZ: what would you take with you on a transatlantic single handed ocean race?
KIRK: hope and a smile.
JAZ: which book and which music album?
KIRK: thanks to digital technology, i would not need to make that narrow a choice -- i would bring all of my Hawaiian music, most of my Beethoven, some Verdi and Rossini, and Miles Davis with Gil Evans; SHADOW COUNTRY and FAR TORTUGA by Peter Matthiessen and several books by Jim Harrison.
JAZ: You play music, right? Which music instrument would you take with you?
KIRK: my tenor ukulele.
JAZ: which is your advice to all the skippers?
KIRK: do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and steer tight to the wind.
JAZ: Thank you
