“Uwe Röttgering, born in 1968, started sailing when he was a child. After crossing the atlantic for the first time under sail in his early twenties, trips to Iceland , Scandinavia and jobs as a charter skipper in the Western Mediterranean followed.
In 1996 he crewed the first German yacht to cross the south-polar-circle,1998 he crossed the North Atlantic solo two times. In the following year he sailed singlehanded in arctic waters to the island Jan Mayen. From 2001 to 2003 a solo trip around the world via Cape Horn followed. The voyage took 783 days and the distance covered was more than 50.000 nm. For this trip the "Trans Ocean Trophy", the most prestigious sailing trophy in Germany , was awarded to Uwe.
For Uwe, who considers himself more as a cruiser than a racer, the OSTAR will be the first solo-offshore race.
His boat FANFAN! (formerly kown as “Olle P”), a 40ft aluminium cutter designed Dick Zaal from Hoorn/NL, was built to compete in the OSTAR in the 1980s. For several reasons she only competed in the TWOSTAR 1986 with a time of 26 days and 9 hours. Uwe purchased her in 1998 and sailed almost 70.000 nm, most of them solo, on board of this ship. After the circumnavigation the boat underwent a major refit in 2005/06 which brought her back to a “almost as new” condition.”
