The IRC result is calculated by multiplying the time the boat takes to get to Newport by a factor that should reflect the performance characteristics of the boat so that, the theory goes, every boat races on equal terms for the overall prize.

It's a bit like the handicap system in Golf, where the potential of the player is taken into account to try to give every player a chance of victory. Here it's the same, although boats have different speed potential, the factor will adjust the overall time so that it should be down to the best skipper to win the IRC prize.

We have removed from the poll the Open 40s, 50s, the Class 40s and the Multihulls as they are likely to be scored under a different mechanism.
